Reflecting on my journey as a pharmacist, I can't help but recall the pivotal moment when failure knocked me off my feet. It was during the phase one residency match process, a time filled with uncertainty and anxiety. As I applied to eight programs, interviewed at only two, and faced the reality of the competitive landscape, I knew deep down that my chances were slim.
Residency match journey
When the news came that I hadn't matched, it wasn't a sudden blow but a gradual realization of impending disappointment. Yet, in that moment of despair, I made a choice—an unwavering decision not to let failure define me. I attended sessions at my school, seeking guidance for phase two, even as the process felt uncertain and unconventional.
What followed was a period of introspection and determination. I shed the cloak of insecurity and embraced a newfound conviction to pursue my dreams relentlessly. I vividly remember a moment of clarity atop a hill beside a cross, where I declared to myself, "I'm meant to do this."
"I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna get a residency like, there's no stopping me at this point."

Finding success after residency failure
Despite setbacks and rejections, I refused to be deterred. With each phone call to residency programs, I demonstrated my unwavering resolve. I didn't wait for opportunities to come to me; I pursued them with fervor, refusing to play small any longer.
Ultimately, it was a serendipitous recommendation that led me to a brand-new residency program in Indiana. Despite initial doubts and insecurities, I took a leap of faith, knowing it aligned with my newfound passion for acute care.
Building resilience in pharmacy
However, the journey didn't end with success. The shadow of failure lingered, casting doubts and insecurities upon my path. Even as I embarked on my clinical pharmacist career, I carried with me the fear of judgment and the weight of perceived inadequacy.
It wasn't until years later, after countless moments of self-doubt and introspection, that I found the courage to share my story openly. I confronted the shame and insecurity head-on, realizing that imperfection doesn't diminish one's worth—it enhances it.
"Failure lasts with you for a long time."
Through yoga and meditation, I found solace in the acceptance of an imperfect yet profoundly interesting life. Each setback, each failure, contributed to the richness of my experience, shaping me into the resilient and determined individual I am today.
