I wanted to take a moment to share something personal with you all, something that's been weighing on my mind lately. It's about identity, specifically my struggle with it in the workplace, and maybe some of you can relate.

Pharmacist identity struggle

You see, for the longest time, I've felt like I've had to compartmentalize parts of myself to fit into the professional mold expected of me. My name, which carries the weight of my heritage and cultural identity, often gets mispronounced or overlooked altogether. And each time it happens, it's like a subtle reminder that I don't fully belong, that my identity isn't valued in the same way.

I've spent years trying to navigate this internal conflict, grappling with questions of authenticity and belonging. Should I correct people when they mispronounce my name, risking coming across as overly sensitive or demanding? Or should I just let it slide, sacrificing a piece of my identity for the sake of convenience? It's a constant tug-of-war between assimilation and authenticity, and honestly, it's exhausting.

But here's the thing I've come to realize: my name is more than just a label; it's a testament to my roots, my heritage, and the journey that has shaped me into who I am today. And by downplaying its significance or shying away from correcting others, I'm doing myself a disservice.

Embracing diversity in pharmacy

So, I've made a conscious decision to embrace my identity, unapologetically and authentically, even if it means stepping out of my comfort zone at times. It's not about demanding special treatment or making a statement; it's about reclaiming my voice and asserting my worth in a profession that often overlooks the importance of individual identity.

And you know what? It's been liberating

Sure, there are still moments of doubt and insecurity, but I'm learning to find strength in vulnerability, to speak up for myself and others who may be struggling with similar issues. Because at the end of the day, our names are more than just a string of letters; they're a reflection of our identity, our heritage, and the stories that make us who we are.

So, to my fellow pharmacists who may be facing similar struggles, know that you're not alone. Your identity matters, your voice matters, and you deserve to be seen and heard for who you truly are.

Let's continue to support and uplift each other, not just as colleagues but as individuals on a shared journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

"It's traumatic when I'm coming to work. And I have to think and rehearse and rank in my head. How I'm going to present and show up."

"Just do your best to make that person feel welcomed and not so odd for having a different name because that overreaction is what makes it bad."
